about

Although he has been playing pedal harp for over 25 years, The Watery Aftemath is multi-instrumentalist and synthesist Darian Scatton’s first exploration of using his first instrument to create abstract music. Over the past decade, apart from his recent work in collaborative projects (Hallowed Bells and Tadzio) his solo output has been largely divided between harp-based chamber pop and sometimes spacious, sometimes gritty modular synthesizer soundscapes. The compositions on The Watery Aftermath finally explore the territory in between, traversing the spectrum from pensive, understated instrumental pop tracks to teeming textural collages.

The pedal harp is the only sound source, but Scatton uses an array of analog and digital effects to explore the outer limits of how much his instrument’s sound can be treated while still retaining its distinctive sonic character: at times gently smudged out and modulated, and at others pitch-shifted, cut up, resampled and layered to create a shimmering cacophony.
