about

The mind protects our memories / our memory builds the mind. This mysterious knot of neurons opens up a window of self reflection to recall the stories we've lived, the people we've loved, and a wealth of knowledge that grounds us in the present. Access to our memory is vital in navigating reality, but Joe Millar can only take so much with him. The Canadian-based artist has a rare form of long-term memory loss where the window of his past is finite and floating - as time marches forward, the details of his earlier years gradually slip away until they are out of reach completely, joining those already gone.

"Sometimes I think of you", the latest body of work under Millar's FernLodge moniker, is a reckoning with this persistence of time. Each of the seven tracks presented here contain fragments of cherished memories imprinted onto simple melodic figures which are then manipulated repeatedly through a web of sonic and emotional feedback. Moments are stretched out into minutes, pure tones bloom into a thick fog, and the remnants of a melody beckon to be heard through the dense static that envelops it. These temporal transformations work to obscure the origins of a moment but reinforce their inherent emotional truth, freeing Millar's essence from the grasp of entropy, to be memorialized in a wash of echoes and remembered once again.
